Keet heroics send Durban City to Nedbank Cup Round of 16

Durban City had to dig deep for a 3-2 win over Chippa United on penalties following a 0-0 draw against Chippa United in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 match at the Chatsworth Stadium on Friday night.

Therefore, City became the fourth team to progress to the Round of 16 after Stellenbosch FC, Mamelodi Sundowns and Vasco Da Gama. Coach Sinethemba Badela's side will be targeting back-to-back wins when they host TS Galaxy in the Betway Premiership match on February 13.

The Chilli Boys, on the other hand, crashed out of the South African FA Cup and they will now focus on retaining their status in the local top tier. Coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi and his charges have turned their attention to their league clash against Richards Bay, which is scheduled for February 14.

The first-half saw the two goalkeepers produce some excellent saves to frustrate the outfield players. Sinoxolo Kwayiba delivered a pinpoint cross for Justice Figuareido, who was fantastically denied by City keeper Darren Keet from point-blank range in the 38th minute.

City's best chance in the first-half fell for an unmarked Terrence Mashego from close. However, the Mamelodi Sundowns loanee's header was superbly saved by keeper Dumisani Msibi and the score was 0-0 during the halftime break, thanks to some brilliant goalkeeping.

The second-half saw City create the better chances, but Msibi made some fine saves to deny Letsie Koapeng, Sphiwe Mahlangu and Saziso Magawana. The 30-year-old ensured that the game ended in a 0-0 draw in regulation time and extra-time followed.

Msibi continued to thwart City players in extra-time as he denied Haashim Domingo and Onele Rulwana, ensuring that the game headed into a penalty shootout after a 0-0 stalemate. However, it was Keet who became the hero in the shootout as the 36-year-old saved three spot-kicks to hand City a 3-2 win on penalties.
