Pirates settle for a point against Chippa

Orlando Pirates endured a frustrating evening on Wednesday after they were held to a goalless draw by DStv Premiership strugglers Chippa United at the Orlando Stadium.

The Buccaneers bossed the game and had 16 attempts at goal, but they were unable to beat Lloyd Kazapua, who pulled off six saves to keep the Chilli Boys in the contest.

It was a second successive draw for Pirates as they went four matches unbeaten in the league to climb above arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs up to fourth in the standings, five points behind second-placed Royal AM.

The Soweto giants quickly took control of proceedings in Johannesburg and created an early chance when Terrence Dzvukamanja forced Kazapua into a save at close range in the fourth minute following a goalmouth scramble.

They had to wait until just after the quarter-hour mark for their next glimpse at goal as Kwame Peprah flicked a header wide of the right post from a corner and Kazapua was called into action again on 24 minutes to block Bandile Shandu's shot with his foot.

The visiting keeper was also required to save Deon Hotto's strike from range that bounced off his chest and Sandile Mthethwa was on hand to clear the danger.

The hosts continued to probe as Ntsikelelo Nyauza directed a looping header over the crossbar from a 29th-minute free-kick, while Richard Ofori was finally given some work to do in the 31st minute when he easily dealt with Andile Mbenyane's curler from range.

Chippa threatened again in the 38th minute through Janovane September, whose long-range effort drew another comfortable save out of Ofori and the first half ended with Bucs on the front foot as Nyauza, Hotto and Abel Mabaso all failed to hit the target with their respective efforts.

The Sea Robbers remained the dominant force in the second half, with Nyauza unleashing a fierce strike from range that was too close to Kazapua in the 73rd minute before Hotto was denied four minutes later in a one-on-one with the keeper after being released through on goal by Linda Mntambo.

The visitors nearly pulled off a smash-and-grab win when Eva Nga Bienvenu thumped a header against the bar from Sammy Seabi's cross seven minutes from time, while at the other end Kazapua pulled off a smart save to prevent Nyauza was scoring a late winner with his head following a corner in the 88th minute.
