Botes: It’s not about individual glory
The Namibia international, who has played a little over 100 games for the club, overtook Dingaan Masanabo as the top marksman when he netted his 28th goal in a 2-2 draw against Mpumalanga Black Aces on October 22.
It was a fitting record for Stars' longest serving current player and further increased his appetite for success.
"It's a personal achievement for me to be now recognised as the club's all-time leading goal-scorer," he told PSL.co.za. "I would really to improve and keep building on that tally.
"I think my game has always been based on more than just being a prolific goal-scoring striker, I have so many aspects and facets to my game, like bringing others into play and I also am one of the best assist providers in the league.
"So it's been good, but I'll be happy to trade that personal glory for the success of the team and winning another cup or any other silverware will make me far happier. The team comes first."
Botes has been at Stars since 2007 when he joined from his only other South African club, Moroka Swallows.
He recalls the early days as being a struggle, but admits that the rewards of the past seven months made winning the MTN8 title earlier this season, even sweeter.
"Ever since I joined the club, they've been struggling...fighting relegation and battling to break into the top eight," he explained.
"So the transition the club has been going through has been quite special for me, especially having been here so long, and so it was fantastic to have finally won something."
Explaining when the change in mentality at the Rustenburg club occurred, he revealed that Cavin Johnson's arrival in 2011 was the start, paying special praise for the man that helped them finish a surprise second in the Absa Premiership last year.
"When I first joined we changed coaches every season I think," he said. "Miguel Gamondi, Steve Komphela, Owen da Gama and then Cavin came in towards the end of 2011.
"I think the change started there and that's actually where the foundation was laid. I think is footprint is here and we owe him a lot of credit for that. We did really well last year, even though we didn’t take home any silverware.
"He left after that, but fortunately Allan (Freese) has been here right through, so not much has had to change. I think we're now seeing the rewards. So we're quite chuffed, but there's a long way to go."
At 33, Botes insists he is well shy of his "sell-by day" and was aiming to play well into his 30s, in a similar way to players like Siyabonga Nomvethe and Sibusiso Zuma, now 35 and 38 respectively, provided the club still wanted him.
Stars are currently eighth on the table, five points off the top, while they are also in the Telkom Knockout semi-finals to be played next month.
"I think emulating what we did last season will be great, but a top five is more realistic," Botes adds. "The ultimate goal is to win the league and you never what can happen, the competition is so tight, so who says we can't."
