Abrahams: Changing mindsets at Chippa
Abrahams made it five points from three games since taking charge of the Chilli Boys when they edged out Platinum Stars 2-1 at Athlone on Tuesday.
Under the former goalkeeper, goal-keeping coach and journalist, Chippa are staring to look a more confident and organised side.
Abrahams has worked on several aspects to make this happen; he has created more competition for places, and has instilled a hunger in his players to do their jobs.
“I have strengthened the depth in the squad, its not just 18 players, I have 22 players who are hungry to play. And every time I have made a substitution it has worked, they come on and score a goal, create a goal. “My philosophy, I come from a tough school, from a challenging area of football, where there were no luxuries, you had to fight hard.
“There was no making a living, it was mostly playing free of charge and when you got paid my cheque the cheque bounced so my philosophy of putting the game first.
“I get the guys to play for their families, for their wives, their daughters their kids. I tell them to play with pride. To quote Bill Shankly of Liverpool, football is bigger than life or death.”
Like Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson, Abrahams has also instilled an ‘us-against-the-world’ mindset in the players:
“I have never been in this position in my career where the players are laughed at and the media makes fun of the boss for his dreams.
“That inspires me and it inspires my players, I use that a lot in my motivation to wipe the smirks off the faces of people that think we are going to be pushovers.
“If you go to the change-rooms now you’ll see a lot of naked guys jumping around and having a lot of fun, the inhibitions are gone.”
Stars coach Cavin Johnson meanwhile saw his side’s five match winning streak come to an end, but was not too upset.
“I prepared them well, we were going to lose sometime, it was how we were going to lose. Today we lost because we never took our chances - we didn’t play bad football and that is the plus for me.
“Its the way you lose, if we lost like we did to Ajax three months ago (4-1) then maybe I would have been upset, but I’m ok with it.”
