Wits add to CTCFC's woes

Bidvest Wits added to Cape Town City's Absa Premiership woes, beating the 10-man visitors 2-0 at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Friday evening.

Terrence Dzvukamanja and Thulani Hlatshwayo were on target for the Clever Boys who remain in fourth place on the log standings, but having cut the gap between themselves and league leaders Kaizer Chiefs to 11 points.

A fifth league match without a win leaves the Citizens in 13th spot and in danger of finishing the year in the relegation zone. City played most of the game with 10-men following the sending off of Ebrahim Seedat in the first-half.

Chances were few and far between in the opening exchanges, despite plenty of impetus from both teams and the perseverance finally paid off for Wits in the 28th minute.

City were guilty of a costly error in a dangerous area, gifting the Zimbabwean the ball who made no mistake in whipping a left-footed shot past Peter Leeuwenburgh from the edge of the box.

The goal breathed confidence into the Clever Boys who dominated the rest of the half. The hosts were only denied a second in the 38th minute through the superb reflexes from Leeuwenburgh who saved Gift Motupa's shot from point-blank range, while Hlatshwayo sent his header attempt inches wide from the resulting corner-kick.

City were dealt another blow in the 41st minute as Seedat received his marching orders following a second bookable offence.

The Clever Boys doubled their advantage in the 56th minute. Man-of-match Sameehg Doutie picked out his captain with a perfectly weighted corner-kick and the Bafana Bafana skipper made no mistake, nodding the ball home.

City, to their credit, continued to put up a fight and were desperately unlucky not to cut the deficit in the 62nd minute as Shane Roberts thumped his shot onto the woodwork.

Chances continued to come at either end of the pitch while Thabo Nodada squandered another late chance for the visitors, his miss with only the goalkeeper to beat summing up another difficult night for the Citizens who end 2019 on a low.
