TKO in Numbers: A look back at 2015
Most of the other action takes place over the weekend, while defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns kick-off their campaign against Polokwane City next Thursday.
The Brazilians were impressive winners of the competition last year. They won the final 3-1 over cup kings Kaizer Chiefs in front of a capacity 53,000 crowd at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
PSL.co.za look back at some of the significant numbers from the tournament.
1 - It was the first time Sundowns had ever beaten Chiefs in a final having previously tried eight times (six in the Premier Soccer League era).
2 - There was no stand-out striker in terms of goals in the 2015 competition. Instead nine players ended on two strikes apiece. They were Sundowns quintet Bongani Zungu, Keagan Dolly, Hlompho Kekana, Leonardo Castro and Player of the Tournament, Thabo Nthethe - the latter trio all netting in the final - as well as Chiefs pair Erick Mathoho and Camaldine Abraw, Danny Venter of Free State Stars and SuperSport's Jeremy Brockie.
2 - There were two penalty shootouts over the 15 games. Spot kicks were needed to decide the big Soweto derby semi-final between Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, which Amakhosi won 6-5 after a goalless draw. It was also goalless in the last 16 encounter between Bloemfontein Celtic and Mpumalanga Black Aces, the latter winning 3-2.
3 - It was the third title for Sundowns after they previously won the title in 1990 and 1999.
4 - Amakhosi had only conceded one goal in the tournament prior to the final. Sibusiso Masina's 79th minute goal in the quarter-finals was the only time their defence was breached. But that backline was annihilated by Sundowns, although key figure Mathoho was an injury absentee.
7 - Sundowns' appearance in the final was their seventh. They were also part of the showpiece game in 1990, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2007 and 2012.
9 - This was the total number of clean sheets that were kept in the competition. Chiefs and Pirates had the most, keeping two each, while there were one each for Sundowns, Aces, Celtic, Lamontville Golden Arrows and Free State Stars.
14 - The Brazilians were the top-scoring team in the competition, netting an impressive 14 times. That was at an average of 3.50 per game. They scored six in one game, a 6-1 trouncing of Ea Lla Koto in the quarter-finals. SuperSport United and Chiefs were next best with six goals each.
16 - Sundowns ended 16 long years of League Cup pain when they won the title. The last time the Brazilians had won the title was in 1999. On that occasion they beat Free State Stars to the title. The score on that day was 2-0 thanks to goals from Alain Amougou and Daniel Mudau at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
17 - The 2015 final was the 17th time that Chiefs contested the final. They have a sensational conversion rate too, winning 13 of those games.
40 - This was the number of goals scored in the 2015 Telkom Knockout. The most in a single game was those seven goals in that 6-1 scoreline at Goble Park.
1,500,000 - The prize money in South African Rands won by runners-up, Chiefs.
4,000,000 - The winning prize money in South African Rands awarded to Sundowns for their win.
