Tshabalala recalls special 2010 TK final

Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns meet in the 2015/16 Telkom Knockout on final next Wednesday with Amakhosi bidding to win the title for the first time in five years.

The last time the Soweto giants became champions, they beat arch rivals Orlando Pirates 3-0 at FNB Stadium.

For captain Siphiwe Tshabalala, it was a particularly difficult time, despite the joy of winning their 13th League Cup title.

The veteran midfielder lost his mother, Rebecca Tshabalala, a day later.

“It was a special game, especially on a personal level,” Tshabalala said. “We were in the final and my mom was in hospital.

“On Friday evening before the game we were in camp and I asked the coach if I could visit my mom.

“I promised my mom and the entire family the gold medal."

Sthembiso Ngcobo bagged a brace with Tshabalala scoring the third goal that sealed the victory in front of a capacity 91,000 crowd at the FNB Stadium.

“I was not fully focused because of my mom, but the day after the final I visited the hospital proudly carrying the gold medal,’ added the Chiefs star. “I did well scoring the match’s last goal. The match required a big match temperament.”

Unfortunately his Tshabalala's mother passed away on Sunday.

Chiefs play Sundowns at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Reconciliation Day, December 16. Kick-off in Durban is at 18h00.
