MTN8: 2014 in numbers

The 2014/15 MTN8 concluded over the weekend with Kaizer Chiefs clinching the title with a 1-0 victory over Soweto foes Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Amakhosi defender Tefu Mashamaite scored the goal that decided the title when he headed in after 28 minutes.

0 - Chiefs' measly defence did not concede a single goal in this season's MTN8, a recipe that proved key to their eventual triumph in the final.

3 - The number of goals scored by competition top-scorer George Maluleka. The Kaizer Chiefs attacker netted a brace in the semi-final first leg away at Platinum Stars and added another to his tally in the second-leg. Four players scored twice in the four games - Pirates pair Kermit Erasmus and Lehlohonolo Majoro as well as Amakhosi duo Mandla Masango and Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

6 - Saturday's loss means Pirates hold the unwanted distinction of ending runners-up the most times, a total of six. They were also silver medal winners in 1974, 1979, 1980, 2007 and 2013. Chiefs have ended as bridesmaids on five occasions, while Mamelodi Sundowns are level with Amakhosi.

10 - This is the number of goals scored by Chiefs in the 2014/15 competition. That ensured they were the highest scoring team , with Pirates ending second after netting seven times.

15 - Chiefs increased their record of tournament wins to 15 after their triumph on Saturday. That puts them six clear of Pirates on the overall table, but the Buccaneers have won the competition under its current name twice, the same number as their Soweto rivals.

22 - The total number of goals scored in this season's competition. That was the second fewest in the MTN8 era - since 2008 - with 25 coming last year, 28 in 2012 and 22 in 2011. The fewest was 20 (2010) and the most 30 (2009), while the inaugural event in 2008 produced 26 goals.

35 - Gauteng has now stretched its total number of MTN8 wins to this number. Five other provinces have won the title on a single occasion each.

38 - The is the total number of yellow cards that were brandished in 2014. Ten of those were for Chiefs' players, including three in the final, while Pirates saw their players cautioned nine times. Impressively, there were no red cards shown this season.
