Solomons confirmed as Polokwane City coach
Boebie Solomons has been announced as the new head coach of Premier Soccer League club Polokwane City.
The newly-promoted team began life in the top flight under coach Duncan Lechesa, the man that had led the club to the National First Division title last season.
But a tough start to their first ever Absa Premiership campaign saw Lechesa parting ways with the team around a month ago.
Several coaches were linked with the vacant position, but on Monday the club officially announced that former Santos and Bidvest Wits manager Solomons will be the man tasked with turning around the team’s fortunes.
“Polokwane City FC has acquired the services of Abubakaar "Boebie" Solomons as head coach with effect from today, 21 October 2013. The move came after a month long search for a head coach. City FC Chairman, Mr Johnny Mogaladi, has warmly welcomed Mr Solomons to the club,” said a post on their official Twitter account.
The 58-year-old Solomons began his coaching career at Santos, where he was assistant manager to Gordon Igesund when they Peoples’ Team won the league at the turn of the century.
Solomons then went on to become head coach at Santos, going on to spend a brief spell at Maritzburg United before earning Bidvest Wits promotion from the NFD to the PSL in 2006.
He subsequently coached at Black Leopards and NFD outfit Winners Park before returning for a second spell at Santos in 2009.
Before signing with Polokwane City, Solomons was the assistant coach at Bloemfontein Celtic, but left the club after head coach Clinton Larsen stepped down two of weeks ago.
Solomons’ first match in charge comes on Wednesday when he takes his side down to Johannesburg for an examination against former club Bidvest Wits.
City are currently in 15th position on the Absa Premiership table, with three points from six games, their only points coming via a win over bottom-of-the-table Ajax Cape Town.
