Jomo: ‘We need luck’

Jomo Sono, the Jomo Cosmos coach, has bemoaned the lack of luck as his side went down agonisingly 2-1 to Orlando Pirates in an Absa Premiership match at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It was a polished performance by Ezenkosi but unfortunately, they had to leave the coastal city of Port Elizabeth empty handed.

“We need to play like the way we played against Pirates going forward; we don’t need to change anything from the performance today. We just need luck. In football, Julio (Leal) will tell you, tactics play a role but you need luck. We will carry on playing like this, we won’t change,” the Cosmos boss said.

It was yet another frustrating afternoon for the “Black Prince” as he watched his side squander some opportunities.

“If you saw the team that played today, we are not playing like a Second Division team, we play as if we have been in the Premiership for many years. The only thing is that we must ask God for a little bit of luck. We created chances, but we are not taking them in the box.

“In the last few games, all our matches have been too close. We could have won, but unfortunately we were not lucky.”

Cosmos took the lead early in the goal after a brilliant build-up in midfield. However, they surrendered the lead at the stroke of halftime when Pirates scored from a penalty.

It was this moment that Sono believes changed the shape of the game. “From Cosmos side, I think we played very well. Unfortunately the goal that brought Pirates back was a penalty; I think it killed the morale of the team a little bit. But in the second half, we decided to have a go at Pirates and I think we did well. They caught us with a goal which I think was a great goal,” Sono added.

Cosmos have not won a game in the Absa Premiership since they won promotion off season. They have flirted with victory, but lapses in concentration have often let them down. Against Pirates, they put together a fluent display but could not finish their chances.

But Sono insists there is light at the end of the tunnel.
