TS Galaxy win to move back into top eight

TS Galaxy ended a four-game losing streak in the DStv Premiership by defeating hosts Baroka FC 1-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The result – secured by a second-half strike from Ebrahim Seedat – saw the Rockets move into eighth place on the log, while Bakgaga drop to 10th.

The teams cancelled each other out in the early stages, with neither giving way in the midfield battle. Baroka’s engine room saw strong showings from Goodman Mosele and Nhlanhla Mgaga, but they were matched stride for stride by the likes of Bathusi Aubaas, Sihle Nduli and Ethan Brooks.

Baroka looked to use the pace of Thamsanq Masiya and Joslin Kamatuka down either flank, though service to striker Evidence Makgopa was generally lacking through the first half. The hosts did create a chance for Gerald Phiri Jr just before the half-hour mark, but his effort was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Marlon Heugh.

Galaxy’s attack of Wayde Lekay and Mxolisi Machupu provided good movement off the ball and the pair combined to create a shooting chance for Nduli in the latter minutes of the half, but the midfielder fired wide to leave the game locked 0-0 at the interval.

Baroka opted for a change in attack at the start of the second stanza when they withdrew Phiri Jr and replaced him with Kgodiso Monama, while just past the hour mark the Rockets also shuffled their pack with the introduction of Justice Figuareido.

The Eswatini international had a sight of goal with just under 20 minutes of regulation time left to play, but his effort from the edge of the box was no trouble for Oscarine Masuluke between the Baroka goal posts.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 78th minute and it was Galaxy who claimed the lead, with the visitors seeing former Cape Town City defender Ebrahim Seedat striking an effort beyond Masuluke.

That fine strike proved to be the difference between the teams, with the Rockets delighted to return to winning form. The clubs will return to DStv Premiership action on Saturday 1 May, with Baroka travelling to SuperSport United and Galaxy hosting Cape Town City.
