AmaTuks book playoff spot
The University of Pretoria will partake in the 2015-16 relegation/promotion battle following a 2-1 Absa Premiership win over Golden Arrows at Tuks Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
AmaTuks headed into the game knowing they had to beat Arrows to stand any chance of survival and that is just what they managed to do. Jomo Cosmos have subsequently been relegated to the National First Division following a 3-1 defeat to Maritzburg United.
Vuyisile Ntombayithethi and Getaneh Kebede found the back of the net for the hosts with Gladwin Shitolo netting a late consolation goal for the visitors.
AmaTuks ended the game with 10-men, Innocent Nemukondeni receiving his marching orders with 10 minutes of regulation time remaining.
The first chance of the match fell to Willem Mwedihanga in the 13th minute. Arguably the clubs best player this season, the Namibia international was unlucky to see his header attempt fly narrowly wide of goal.
Tristyn Coetsee has been the preferred choice in goal since Shaun Bartlett's arrival and the shot stopper showed his worth, getting down well to keep out Frank Mhango's shot.
After firing a warning-shot through Mpho Maruping from a set-piece, AmaTuks took the lead from a free-kick in the 29th minute. Ntombayithethi continuing his good form in front of goal, heading past a stranded Maxamilian Mbaeva.
Arrows were desperate for a victory for their own reasons, as they were chasing a top eight finish. Gladwin Shitolo forced Coetsee into a good save in the 37th minute before Kwanele Hlongwane saw his effort canon off the outside of the post two minutes later.
Having survived a nervy passage of play, AmaTuks doubled their advantage in the 43rd minute. Getaneh Kebede's free-kick from an acute angle somehow sneaking past Mbaeva at his near post.
Arrows were handed a life-line in the 80th minute after Nemukondeni received his marching order following a second bookable offence.
Abafana Bes'thende finally pulled a goal back through Shitolo in stoppage time, but it was too little too late for Clinton Larsen's men as Tuks held on for all three points.
Arrows finish the season in ninth place, missing out on a top eight finish due to SuperSport United's superior goal difference.
