Birds pegged back by Nyondo

Atusaye Nyondo's second-half strike secured a 1-1 draw for the University of Pretoria against Moroka Swallows at Tuks Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Vuyisile Wana had given Craig Rosslee's troops the lead, but like they did against SuperSport United, the Soweto side failed to hold on as fears of relegation to the National First Division mounted.

The point for the time being moves Swallows up to 15th spot while AmaTuks remain 10th.

The Dube Birds almost got off to the perfect start, but Boris Savic saw his header from a Vuyisile Wana corner-kick cleared off the line with three minute on the clock.

Swallows continued to pile on the pressure and were again denied at the last hurdle with Lucky Baloyi's in-direct free kick from point-blank range cleared by a resilient AmaTuks defence in the sixth minute.

The visitors got their just reward in the 23rd minute, Wana curling his left-footed effort past Washinton Arubi after being set free by Siyabonga Nomvethe.

Grant Kekana and his teammates were caught ball watching as the Swallows wide man ghosted into the area before finishing with aplomb.

AmaTuks first chance fell to Nyondo five minutes later. The Malawi international did well to lose his marker inside the area, but failed in his attempt to find the back of the net on the volley at the back post.

Chances dried up as the half grew on with Thabo Mnyamane sending a late header well wide on the cusp of halftime.

The hosts levelled matters five minutes into the second-half through Nyondo. The AmaTuks frontman ran onto a Geofrey Massa's flick on before expertly firing past the onrushing Stephens Sage.

Swallows were eager to restore their lead and went close just after the hour mark with Arubi doing well to keep out Felix Obada's powerful effort from the edge of the area.

The Zimbabwe and AmaTuks gloves man was again called into action with five minutes remaining and in similar fashion denied Obada with a low save.

Second-half substitute Lerato Chabangu sent his free-kick inches wide in stoppage time in what would prove to be the last chance of an energy sapping clash.
