Rodgers fires Stars to victory
Platinum Stars recorded a second win in succession for only the second time this season thanks to a 1-0 victory over the University of Pretoria in an Absa Premiership encounter at Tuks Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Eleazar Rodgers 87th minute header securing Stars sixth win of the season.
The win moves Dikwena up to 12th while AmaTuks remain seventh.
Sammy Troughton made two changes to the side that beat Maritzburg United at the weekend with Denver Mukamba and the ever reliable Ronald Ketjijere returning to the starting eleven for the hosts.
Allan Freese stuck with the players that recorded their first win in 2015 with Tlou Segolela not included in the match day squad. Out of favour Robert Ng'ambi was named on the bench.
Stars got off to a bright start with Ndumiso Mabena going within inches of grabbing the opener with five minutes on the clock. The former Orlando Pirates man denied on the line by the combination of Washington Arubi and Siyabonga Shoyisa who did well to clear from danger.
The visitors dominated in midfield with the AmaTuks defence under constant pressure in the opening half-hour.
Vuyo Mere saw his powerful free-kick fly just wide while Mabena and Rodgers forced Arubi into relatively straight forward saves.
With AmaTuks on the back foot, Geofrey Massa was under pressure to pick up the long ball which failed to bare fruit. This prompted an early change with Thabo Mosadi replacing Mukamba who hardly saw any action
Stars dominated until the break, but to no avail as the teams entered the tunnel with the game deadlocked.
The game continued at the same tempo after the break with both Stars and AmaTuks failing to hold on to possession for an extended period of time.
Mpho Matsi went close for the hosts against the run of play in the 67th minute. His first time effort from 25 yards going flying just wide.
AmaTuks were dealt a major blow with 20 minutes remaining as Atusaye Nyondo left the park on a stretcher after a clash of heads with Masenamela.
Stars continued were they left off after the lengthy injury delay with Tintswalo Tshabalala curling his free-kick just wide.
Dikwena finally found the breakthrough with three minutes of regulation time remaining. Rodgers heading in Tshabalala's free-kick for his fifth league goal of the season.
