Top four record draws, huge win for Spurs

The weekend’s GladAfrica Championship action saw the top four of JDR Stars, Pretoria University, Uthongathi FC and Richards Bay all record draws to keep the status quo at the head of the table, while Cape Town Spurs gave their survival hopes a massive boost with a crushing win away to Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

Saturday’s headline result saw log leaders JDR Stars held 1-1 at home by fourth-placed Richards Bay at the Soshanguve Stadium. Stars claimed an early lead through Ishmael Wadi, but were pegged back shortly before halftime by a Vusimuzi Mngomezulu equaliser.

This gave either Pretoria University or Uthongathi the chance to go top of the table on goal difference on Sunday if either could win their match in Tshwane, but instead a goalless stalemate was the result.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Black Leopards took a big step away from the relegation zone with a 1-0 home win over Pretoria Callies, Venda Football Academy leapfrogged Platinum City Rovers into fifth place with a 1-0 triumph at Profert Park, and Cape Town All Stars were held 2-2 at Parow Park by bottom-of-the-log Jomo Cosmos. Ezenkosi remain the only winless team this season across the two professional leagues at the top of South Africa’s football pyramid.

Sunday, aside from the AmaTuks-Uthongathi draw, also saw TS Sporting edge Hungry Lions 1-0 away to move into the top 10, while Cape Town Spurs moved to within one point of safety by thrashing TTM 4-0 at Thohoyandou Stadium thanks to second-half goals from Chico Bunga, Jairo Da Silva, Mosiatlhaga Abednego and Ashley Cupido.

Finally, the clash between Polokwane City and Free State Stars at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium was abandoned due to inclement weather.

The GAC will continue with another full round of matches next next weekend, 27-28 November, headlined by JDR Stars and Pretoria University visiting Cape Town Spurs and Venda Football Academy respectively.
