Swallows fight back to deny Baroka

Swallows fought back to hold Baroka FC to a 1-1 draw in the DStv Premiership match at the Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

As a result, the Beautiful Birds and Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele ended the season in the sixth and 10th spots respectively on the league standings.

The Beautiful Birds threatened first just six minutes into the game through Kaizer Chiefs loanee Given Thibedi after the Bakgaga Ba Mphahlele defence was exposed.

Thibedi afforded some space and time and he unleashed a shot that was saved by Baroka goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke, who was well-positioned to make a save.

Masuluke then made a smart save to deny Zaphaniah Mbokoma after Kamohelo Mahlatsi had played a long ball three minutes before the half-hour mark.

However, it was Baroka, who took the lead on the half-hour mark when Ananias Gebhardt scored to hand the visitors a 1-0 lead, with Thuso Mogale providing an assist.

Baroka were leading 1-0 at the interval after containing Swallows.

Givemore Khupe and Lebohang Mokoena were introduced by Swallows coach Brandon Truter prior to the start of the second-half and the move paid off.

Khupe levelled matters five minutes into the second-half when the 21-year-old defender scored to make it 1-1 after Baroka had failed to clear a corner-kick.

The two teams then attacked each other without any fear as they searched for more goals, with Baroka coach Matsimela Thoko having introduced Augustine Mahlonoko and Manuel Kambala.

However, Swallows and Baroka were unable to create clear-cut chances in the closing proceedings, and ultimately, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
