Urban Warriors add to Birds woes

Ajax Cape Town came from behind to beat Moroka Swallows 2-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

The result sees the Birds ending the night in last position on the standings, behind AmaZulu on goal difference, while the Cape team are in fifth spot.

Swallows put in a committed performance on the night and scored first through Lentshene Phalane, but conceded two soft goals at corner kicks as headers from Riyaad Norodien and Thabiso Nkoana sealed the win for Ajax.

It was the visiting team who made the stronger start to the game, a committed looking Swallows side spending most of the first 20 minutes in the Ajax half, although home keeper Anssi Jaakkola was not called into making any saves.

The Urban Warriors began to enjoy more of the play as the game approached the half hour mark, but their final touches in and around the Birds’ box failed to yield any attempts on goal.

It was in fact only in the 38th minute that the first proper opportunity on goal arrived, but Siyabonga Nomvethe’s shot was blocked by a committed Rivaldo Coetzee.

A few seconds later and the Johannesburg-based side had another opportunity when Lucky Baloyi pulled the trigger from the edge of the box, but Jaakkola got down smartly to make a good save.

The first chance of the second stanza fell to the Birds, with Phalane going close with a left-footed free kick in the 48th minute.

Ajax’s most promising move of the night came 10 minutes into the second half when Keagan Dolly went on a storming run down the left wing, his cross narrowly eluding the Ajax front-runners.

But it was Swallows who were to take what was probably a deserved lead when Phalane curled in a superb free kick from out on the right flank, beating Jaakkola at the near post on 63 minutes.

Ajax’s response however proved to be swift as they hit back just four minutes later when Norodien headed home from Erwin Isaacs’ 68th minute corner.

The match seemed set to end in a draw, but the Urban Warriors kept on pushing for the winning goal right into added time and were rewarded when substitute Nkoana headed in at the near post from Dolly’s 93rd minute corner.
