Maritzburg, Celtic play to goalless draw

Maritzburg United and Bloemfontein Celtic settled for a point each when their Absa Premiership encounter ended in a 0-0 draw at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Team of Choice remain unbeaten at home but drop down to fourth place with 16 points from 10 matches, while Celtic are down in 10th place with 13 points.

The hosts came close to breaking the deadlock in the 7th minute when Thamsanqa Mkhize got onto the end of a corner from Thokozani Sekotlong, but his header just missed the target.

With the pitch greasy due to the light rain, both sides tried to capitalise from long range shots, but Jacky Motshegwa sent his effort wide of the upright in the 14th minute, before Abel Mabaso did the same a minute later.

Motshegwa continued to threaten for the visitors and in the 21st minute he did manage to get his shot on target, but it lacked the pace and the direction to trouble Virgil Vries in the United goals.

Ten minutes later the lively Mondli Cele also tried to catch the goalkeeper off-guard, but his shot sailed wide of the post as the two sides went into the break with the scores level at 0-0.

The two sides continued to look for the equalizer early in the second half but Cele drilled another effort wide of goal in the 54th minute, while Alfred Ndengane headed wide from Lyle Lakay’s corner three minutes later.

The Team of Choice continued to pressing for the opening goal but substitute Mohammed Anas failed to get his header on target in the 66th minute, before captain Ashley Hartog shot wide of the upright five minutes later.

The action continued on both ends but the goalkeepers remained spectators as Ndengane directed an effort wide of goal in the 75th minute, while Nhlanhla Vilakazi failed to keep his shot down two minutes later.

The next attempt came from another substitute as Kurt Lentjies fired his shot on target in the 83rd minute, but Patrick Tignyemb was positioned well to hold onto the ball as the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
