Lamola nets brace as Celtic down Aces

Bloemfontein Celtic returned to winning ways in the Absa Premiership when they defeated Mpumalanga Black Aces 2-0 at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Lerato Lamola scored a brace in the second half as his side grabbed maximum points against an Aces side which finished the game with ten men following the dismissal of Mbulelo Mabizela.

The first chance of the match fell for Celtic in the fifth minute when Musa Nyatama created some space on the left, but his shot was saved by Bafana Nhlapo.

The hosts had another opportunity in the 14th minute as Keagan Buchanan’s deep corner found Joel Mogorosi at the far post, but he failed to keep his header down.

Two minutes later Musa Bilankulu also did well to connect with another corner from Buchanan but the central defender headed the ball into the ground and over the crossbar.

Mogorosi came close again in the 19th minute after receiving a pass from Nyatama on the left, only to curl his right-footed shot wide of the far post.

The visitors’ first real chance arrived in the 31st minute from a brilliant move which saw Tendai Ndoro finding Thabo Qalinge with a backheel in the centre of the box, but he blasted his shot over the target.

Clayton Daniels also connected with Buchanan’s corner in the 33rd minute, but his effort was blocked before the line, while Nhlapo used his feet to stop a goalbound strike from Nyatama two minutes later.

The last chance of the half fell for AmaZayoni in added time as Onyekachi Okonkwo went on a solo run on the left before squaring the ball towards Ndoro, but Tsietsi Mahoa made a brilliant tackle to prevent him from nudging the ball in.

Clive Barker’s side also fired the first shot in anger in the second half with Qalinge cutting in from the left before drilling a right-footed shot wide of the near post and into the sidenetting.

The deadlock was broken five minutes into the second half as Lamola latched onto a backpass from Ofentse Nato and nudged the ball past Nhlapo before firing home from close range.

Lamola grabbed his brace two minutes later, bringing down a cross from David Nkausu on the right and then skipping away from Nato before beating Nhlapo at his near post from a tight angle.

Celtic came close to grabbing their third goal in the 62nd minute when Mogorosi was played through the middle, but Nhlapo came off his line to block his shot, while Buchanan’s follow-up shot clipped the top of the crossbar.

Themba Zwane then saw his dipping volley going inches over the crossbar at the other end in the 63rd minute, while Nyatama missed the target again two minutes later.

The visitors were then reduced to ten men with five minutes left on the clock as Mabizela was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence, but it made no difference as Celtic held on for the 2-0 win.
