Nyadombo own-goal saves Stars

Free State Stars scored a second-half equaliser to earn a point as their Absa Premiership clash against AmaZulu ended in a 1-1 draw at Goble Park on Sunday afternoon.

Usuthu opened the scoring early in the first half through Ayanda Dlamini but Carlington Nyadombo scored an own-goal deep into the second half to level the scores.

Usuthu broke the deadlock in the fifth minute when Dlamini met a cross from Njabulo Manqana to head the ball past Daniel Agyei.

Both sides applied some pressure and won numerous corners but were unable to get their efforts on target to trouble the goalkeepers.

Paulus Masehe was the first to test Aubrey Mathibe in the 36th minute, but the AmaZulu goalkeeper was able to make a solid save.

Ea Lla Koto had another opportunity from a freekick on the stroke of halftime but this time Danny Venter sent his effort over the crossbar.

The hosts asked the questions again in the second half but Mathibe stood strong to deny Sadat Ouro-Akoriko in the 69th minute, before stopping another effort from Camaldine Abraw three minutes later.

The pressure eventually paid off in the 79th minute when Nyadombo headed the ball into his own net while trying to make a clearance.

Usuthu had two more chances to restore their lead late in the game but Goodman Dlamini fired wide of the upright in the 87th minute, while Nkosinathi Mthiyane also saw his effort flying to the left of the post in the second minute of added time.

AmaZulu remain in seventh place with 14 points from 11 matches, while Stars have moved up to ninth place with 12 points.
