Absa Premiership defending champions, Orlando Pirates moved within touching distance to top of the log side, Mamelodi Sundowns this weekend.

A total of 25 goals were scored this weekend – between Saturday and Sunday in the Absa Premiership.

Sundowns went to the weekend with no threat of losing their number one spot – and they went a step further to consolidate with a 3-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town at Newlands.

However, it is the Bucs who will get the kudus for their performance against rivals, Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby on Saturday where Pirates emerged 3-2 victors at FNB Stadium.

Pirates now have 36 points – four points shy of leaders, Sundowns. Ironically, these two sides will clash at Loftus on Tuesday night in an Absa Premiership game.

Three points for Pirates will take them to 39 points – meaning that Sundown’s rein at the top is not threatened – at least for another week.

Both Moroka Swallows and SuperSport United deposed Chiefs from the top – with the latter taking over the fourth spot while the former moved to third after a 1-1 draw with Amazulu at Dobsonville this weekend.

It is at the bottom half of the table where things are getting tricky and exciting.

Jomo Cosmos are now rooted at the bottom of the log following their goalless draw with SuperSport United. Cosmos have 13 points from 19 games. They have drawn 10 of their 19 games and have won only once.

Cosmos will take on third-placed Swallows at Sinaba Stadium on Tuesday night in a win-at-all cost game.

Second from bottom are Black Leopards who have 14 points from 20 games.

They will travel to Harry Gwala to face Maritzburg United on Wednesday night.

Santos is third from bottom with 19 points from 20 games followed by Golden Arrows (above them) on 20 points from the same number of games.
