Jomo Cosmos registered their first game of the 2011/2012 Absa Premiership season on Saturday night by beating Platinum Stars 2-1 and no one is happier than long-time servant, captain and goalkeeper Avril Phali.

“What a feeling man, what a feeling! It’s been a long time coming and God has answered our prayers. We are all very happy,” Phali told

This was Cosmos 13th match of the season and, although Stars staged a late comeback, Ezenkosi held on to victory. Siyabonga Nhlapo and Ousmane Berthe scored for the hosts while Terence Mandaza netted for Stars.

“It was difficult. They really came at us and we had to fight hard for this victory. We made sure about our chances and I think we controlled the game for most parts. But sooner or later they were going to threaten and we were forced to defend. Leading two-nil is not easy and Stars is a very good team, so we really worked hard for this win.”

Despite the historic victory – it was also Cosmos first win against Dinaledi in five years –Ezenkosi still find themselves at the bottom of the Premiership table with only eight points. Phali though is adamant that they will emerge from the drop zone. Next up is a trip to Maritzburg United before they end the first half of the season off against Santos.

“We are confident, happy and believing in ourselves again. Well we always believed in ourselves and it was just a matter of time before we got a win,” the former Orlando Pirates keeper said.

“Now that we on a high we intend to keep it this way. It won’t be easy against Maritzburg or Santos but I believe we are hungrier and hungrier. We want to end this half with a win and then start next year off in the same way. We have so much of work to do and we will make it.”

Leopards are 15th with 10 points, Santos is 14th with 11 and Dinaledi is 13th with 12 points.
