Ajax held by Cosmos

It was two points dropped for Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night as they drew 1-1 with Jomo Cosmos.

The first half was a frustrating one for the home side as they had most of the play but found themselves up against a steely Cosmos defence.

After a cagey opening 10 minutes which saw Ajax gradually growing more dominant, the first real chance of the game fell to Khama Billiat, who wasted a decent opportunity as he headed over the bar.

Within a minute however Ezenkosi were in front as Siyabonga Nhlapo took advantage of some untidy play in the heart of the Ajax defence to sprint though on goal and poke the ball past Sander Westerveld, the ball going into the net off the upright.

The Urban Warriors continued to try and play their passing game, but found their moves breaking down in the final third.

When they were able to breach the Cosmos defence in the 35th minute, Terror Fanteni had to watch as his drive from the edge of the area hit the bottom of the upright.

Ajax again started the second half making the play, with Cosmos looking to hit on the counter.

And they should indeed have scored in this manner in the 50th minute when the ball was worked to Bamuza Sono, but his parting shot was weak and easily saved.

But Ajax finally got reward for their endeavours when in the 56th minute Terror Fanteni pounced from close range after Lebo Manyama had hit the bar.

Billiat looked set to put the home side ahead for the first time in the 72nd minute, but his volley was superbly saved by Avril Phali.

Substitute Alcardo van Graan had a chance 11 minutes from time, but juts could not get enough purchase on his header.

With the rain coming down, the Urban Warriors continued to push for the winner in the closing stages, but could create no further clear-cut chances as Ezenkosi defended vailiantly.
