Absa Premiership returns

After a long FIFA international break, Absa Premiership football will return in earnest this week with some mouth-watering clashes.

The last league matches were played almost a fortnight ago on September 28. On Friday, last season’s Absa Premiership runners-up Ajax Cape Town will kick off proceedings with a match against struggling Jomo Cosmos at the Athlone Stadium.

Ajax, who are currently sitting sixth in the log standings, will be hoping to cover some ground following a spate of mixed fortunes. The Cape side will meet a Cosmos side that is hungry and desperate for maximum points.

Cosmos are yet to win this season – after having registered three draws and 4 losses in their seven games. This record has been a cause for concern in the Cosmos camp.

On the same day, former Absa Premiership champions, SuperSport United will host Maritzburg United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. SuperSport are the incumbent leaders in the league race so far with 15 points from seven games.

This fixture though will be fascinating to watch as Maritburg are yet to lose this season. Under Ian Palmer, the Kwa-Zulu Natal side has been given a facelift. They will travel to the capital town full of confidence.

On Saturday, four matches will be underway. Newly appointed Golden Arrows coach, Muhsin Ertugral will make his re-entry to South African football when his side takes on Mamelodi Sundowns at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

The former Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax Cape Town mentor replaced Enrst Middendorp who parted ways with the Durban club after a spate of inauspicious results. Sundowns are second from the top with only one point separating them from leaders, SuperSport.

Sunday will see the much anticipated Free State derby between Bloemfontein Celtic and Free State Stars at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium. Bloemfontein Celtic is yet to assert their authority this season having suffered three defeats already this season.

Their neighbours on the other had have pulled some surprise results including a last-gasp victory against Orlando Pirates a fortnight ago. The Steve Kompela side is seventh in the log with 11 points – two places ahead of Celtic.
