Three key players at AmaZulu

In a new series looking at all 16 Premier Soccer League clubs, we assess who have been three key players at AmaZulu so far this season as Usuthu struggle at the wrong end of the table.

BONGI NTULI

There can barely have been a more important single player at any club this campaign, with Ntuli having remarkably scored 12 of the club 14 league goals this season.

It is a massive contribution and a sign of his vital importance to the side, who have battled up front, but managed to stay clear of bottom place by virtue of Ntuli’s goals.

Indeed, he scored the winner in the stunning 1-0 success over Kaizer Chiefs just before the break in the season for the coronavirus pandemic, and the club will likely face a battle to keep him for next season no matter what happens this campaign.

SIYETHEMBA SITHEBE

Sithebe is the only player in the AmaZulu squad to have started every game this season, and his energetic displays as an attacking midfielder have aided Ntuli with a number of assists.

Sithebe is in his third season with the club and had largely been a regular from the start after joining from second-tier Mbombela United at the end of the 2016/17 campaign, when the side missed out on promotion through the play-offs.

Though not prolific in front of goal, he is a tireless worker and one of the first names on the teamsheet for the succession of coaches at Usuthu this campaign.

TAPELO XOKI

Club captain Xoki, who previously used the surname ‘Nyongo’, has led the side through a difficult campaign, but never let his level drop.

The centre-back has played in a struggling team, but has marshalled the defence well, with conceding not one of the team’s problems this campaign, where they have instead battled for goals.

Indeed, their 27 goals conceded is only one more than Orlando Pirates and among the better records of any team in the bottom half of the table.

Xoki mist take some of the credit for that in what is his sixth season with the Durban-based side.
