Maritzburg held by stubborn Chippa

Chippa United and Maritzburg United drew 0-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium on Saturday night.

The draw left the Chilli Boys and the Team of Choice placed 10th and sixth respectively on the league standings.

The Team of Choice began the match brightly with Mxolisi Kunene looking lively down the left-hand side for the away side.

The left-footed player delivered a dangerous curling cross for Gabriel Nyoni in the ninth minute, but the Chippa defence reacted quickly and cleared the ball away.

Daylon Claasen then watched on his goal-bound shot was deflected wide of the target as the Team of Choice pushed for the opening goal.

Maritzburg upped the tempo after the half-hour mark and Judas Moseamedi's header was well saved by Chippa goalkeeper Veli Mothwa.

The last chance of the first-half fell for former Ajax Amsterdam playmaker Claasen, whose strike shaved the upright five minutes before halftime.

The score was 0-0 at halftime with the Team of Choice having failed to take their chances.

Kunene continued to cause havoc for the Chilli Boys' defence after the restart as the away side looked to break the deadlock

The 28-year-old player did well down the left-hand side before delivering a quality cross into the box and Mothwa was forced to come out and gather the ball.

Nyoni came very close to scoring from Kunene's cross after the hour-mark, but the striker's header hit the crossbar with Mothwa well beaten in the Chippa goal-posts.

Phetso Maphanga was introduced by Chippa coach Norman Mapeza as the Chilli Boys looked to snatch a late winning goal.

However, the two teams were unable to score on the night and Chippa drew 0-0 with Maritzburg.
