Billiat fires Sundowns past Wits

Mamelodi Sundowns secured a 2-0 win over Bidvest Wits in an Absa Premiership match at the Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday night.

The victory takes the Brazilians to fourth spot on the league standings, while the Clever Boys remain 15th minute.

Wits goalkeeper Darren Keet was called into action just two minutes into the match as the visitors looked to grab an early lead.

The former South Africa youth international denied Sundowns full-back Tebogo Langerman, who was looking to score with a long range shot.

Although the momentum was with Wits, Sundowns nearly broke the deadlock in 17th minute following a quick counter-attack by the visitors.

Sibusiso Vilakazi set up his Sundowns' speedy teammate Thapelo Morena and latter was brilliantly denied by Keet.

Wits were struggling to continue the visitors. A good move involving Langerman and Percy Tau nearly resulted in a goal for the Brazilians on the half-hour mark.

South Africa international Tau received the ball from Langerman and he tried to chip Keet, but it went wide of the target.

Sundowns piled more pressure towards the end of the first-half and Vilakazi rattled the upright with a thunderous long-range effort in the 38th minute.

Keet continued to keep Clever Boys in the game as he made a good save to deny Vilakazi in the 42nd minute.

The score was 0-0 between Wits and Sundowns following a first-half which was dominated by the visitors, but they could not beat Keet.

Thabang Monare had a chance to make it 1-0 to Wits three minutes after the restart, but his effort was easily saved by Sundowns keeper Denis Onyango.

The Clever Boys were made to rue that squandered chance as second-half substitute Khama Billiat made an immediate impact in the 62nd minute.

The lethal forward forward beat Keet with a decent shot from inside the box to make it 1-0 to Sundowns with Tau grabbing an assist.

Sundowns thought they had doubled their lead in the 78th minute after Keet denied Vilakazi, before Tau, who was ruled offside, scored.

However, the Brazilians did double their lead three minutes later and it was Billiat, who scored with a low shot to make it 2-0 to Sundowns.

Wits searched for a late consolation in the latter stages of the game, but Sundowns stood firm at the back and they emerged 2-0 winners.
