Dikwena edge Ajax to break their duck

Platinum Stars registered their first win of the Absa Premiership season by defeating Ajax Cape Town 1-0 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Vuyo Mere with the only goal of the game as Dikwena move within one point of the Urban Warriors on the log standings.

It was easy to see in the opening half-hour why the two teams have been struggling at the wrong end of the table this season, with the early exchanges very untidy and not very eye-catching for the few who had gathered to watch.

After 30 minutes neither team had registered a single shot on target, with both teams struggling to find any sort of rhythm.

Neo Makua tried his best to create something for the Urban Warriors and after he was fouled in a dangerous position, Thabo Mosadi guided the resulting free-kick straight down Dino Visser's throat in the 37th minute.

Roscoe Pietersen was then unlucky to see his header attempt canon off the woodwork five minutes later.

Donning the captain's armband in place of the suspended Mosa Lebusa, the defender-come-midfielder rose highest from a corner-kick and was only denied a goal by the post. The visitors unlucky not to be a goal up at the break.

In search of all three points, either side introduced a forward following the interval with Brian Mwila and Sedwyn George making their way onto the pitch for Dikwena and Ajax Cape Town respectively.

Platinum Stars duly opened the scoring as Mere guided his free-kick attempt past Jody February in the 51st minute. The skipper stepping up to the plate for the hosts.

Mwila should've doubled Dikwena's lead on the hour mark, but the Zambian forward failed to beat the Urban Warriors shot-stopper after breaking through on goal.

Ajax Cape Town launched wave-after-wave of attack and went close through George in the 76th minute, but he was brilliantly denied by Visser.

Prince Nxumalo duly made his way onto the pitch for the visitors with Stanley Menzo throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the Stars's defence in the closing stages of the match.

Nxumalo came within inches of pulling the teams level in added time but he too struck the woodwork, before George guided the rebound over the crossbar.

Dikwena doing just about enough to register their first win in 10 league games this season, as Roger De Sa got one over one of his former employers.
