Defending champs Wits still winless

The defending league champions Bidvest Wits are still without a win in the 2017/18 Absa Premiership season after drawing 2-2 with Free State Stars at Goble Park on Wednesday night.

Wits started well and opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Kombamelo Kodisang drove into the box from the right and saw his cross-cum-shot from an acute angle, 12-yards out turned into the net by goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare, 1-0.

Five minutes later Free State nearly drew level when a low cross from the right by Sinethemba Jantjie was met by Relebogile Makhouane, but his 14-yard shot was superbly saved by Moeneeb Josephs.

The Ea Lla Koto continued to pile on the pressure and were finally rewarded for their efforts with an equaliser in the 34th minute when a great passing movement down the left flank was concluded with Katlego Mokhuoane expertly slotting the ball home from 12-yards out, 1-1.

Wits controlled the remainder of the half but failed to re-take the lead before the break.

The away side came close to finding their second goal four minutes into the second half when Daylon Claasen met a cross from the right, but his header went inches wide.

On the hour mark Classen turned provider when his corner-kick from the right was met by Eleazar Rodgers, but his ten-yard header was well-saved by the Stars keeper.

Free State Stars’ task was made even more difficult when they were reduced to ten men in the 69th minute when Thamsanqa Teyise received his second yellow card of the match.

Wits pushed numbers forward after that and managed to take the lead in the 82nd minute when Reeve Frosler drove into the box, beating four defenders on his way, before calmly slotting home from 14-yards out, 2-1.

Frosler went from hero to zero seven minutes later when he brought Sibusiso Hlubi down inside the box and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.

Siphelele Mthembu stepped up for Free State and duly levelled matters to rescue a point for his side, 2-2.
