Wits take advantage in MTN8 semifinal

Goals from Eleazar Rodgers, Elias Pelembe and Gabadinho Mhango ensured Bidvest Wits claimed a 3-0 win against Cape Town City in the MTN8 semifinal first-leg at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night.

The hosts enjoyed ball possession in the opening stages of the encounter and were looking dangerous as Mhango and Rodgers combined upfront.

Despite controlling the proceedings, the hosts failed to use their advantage, but Eric Tinkler's men cracked in the 21st minute.

A cross from the right through Mhango down the left found the lanky striker Rodgers in the box and he easily slotted it home from the far corner, beating Shu-Aib Walters.

In the 38h minute, Daine Klate picked out Pelembe in the box from the left flank and the Mozambican winger beat his marker before easily finishing past goalkeeper Walters, making it 2-0.

However, with one minute remaining to the interval, Mhango made it 3-0 after receiving a long ball from Klate in the middle of the park as he easily flicked the ball over the oncoming Walters, who was exposed by his defence.

Tinkler introduced Judas Moseamedi for Bongolethu Jayiya and the substitute took two shots at goal, but was denied by Moeneeb Josephs as he failed to hit the target.

The match had drama towards the 80th minute when Judas Moseamedi pushed Mhango on the touchline, Josephs intervened and he was shown his marching orders, prompting Hunt to introduce goalkeeper Darren Keet.

Sifiso Myeni made his debut and he nearly produced a goal after making a wonderful solo run on the right flank but it was deflected for a corner.

In the end, the hosts managed to hold onto their 3-0 lead and will now head to the Mother City with an added advantage.

Meanwhile, the second leg is scheduled to be staged at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday 17 September.
