Neither Star shines in stalemate

Free State Stars and Platinum Stars played to a 1-1 draw in an Absa Premiership match at Goble Park on Saturday afternoon.

The result sees Platinum Stars remain in third place with 47 points, ten points adrift of second placed Bidvest Wits and two points ahead of fourth placed Kaizer Chiefs.

The draw for Free State sees them remain in the 11th place on the table with 34 points, four points adrift of a top eight place.

The first chance of the game fell to Dikwena in the seventh minute after a poor clearance fell to Tintswalo Tshabalala on the edge of the box, but he fired inches wide.

Goalkeeper Johnny Mathole came to Free State’s rescue in the 15th minute after a diving stop saw him turn an 18-yard shot from Ndumiso Mabena around the post.

The home side began to find their footing in the match after that and had their first crack on goal in the 25th minute, but Lucky Mohomi saw his long range effort fly over the crossbar.

Ten minutes later Mohomi made no such mistake after working his way into the box and clinical firing the ball into the bottom corner of the Platinum Stars goal, 1-0.

Free State nearly doubled their lead five minutes before the break, but a shot from Sello Japhta was superbly saved by goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela.

The half ended 1-0 in favour of Free State.

Dikwena came out strongly in the second half and equalised five minutes after the restart thanks to a wonderfully struck 25-yard free-kick from Ndumiso Mabena, 1-1.

Platinum Stars nearly took the lead just after the hour mark when Mabena met a cross from the right with a strong header, but his effort shaved the wrong side of the woodwork.

Vuyo Mere missed another guilt-edged chance in the 77th minute when he met a Mabena cross, but his header flew over the crossbar at point-blank range.

Neither side could find a winner in the final ten minutes as the match ended 1-1.
