Arrows win over Stars

Frank Mhango's solitary strike earned Golden Arrows a 1-0 win over Free State Stars in an Absa Premiership clash played in at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Saturday afternoon.

The victory took Abafana Bes'thende up to ninth on the Absa Premiership standings, while Ea Lla Koto slipped to the 11th spot on the league table.

Ea Lla Koto threatened first when Katlego Mashego set up Makhehlene Makhaula who unleashed a powerful low shot which went inches wide of the target just five minutes into the game.

Danny Venter had a go from distance for the visitors in the 13th minute, but the ball sailed over Abafana Bes'thende goalkeeper Maximilian Mbaeva's goal-posts.

But it was the home side who broke the deadlock in the 27th minute after Kudakwashe Mahachi set-up Frank Mhango who beat Stars goalkeeper Johnny Mathole to make it 1-0 to Arrows.

Six minutes later, Stars striker Ayanda Nkosi delivered a great cross into the Arrows box and Namibia international Mbaeva caught the ball as the visitors looked to respond with a goal.

Nhlanhla Vilakazi's cross found his Stars teammate Makhaula who pulled the trigger, but his shot was blocked by Arrows captain Matome Mathiane four minutes before the halftime break.

Stars were awarded a free-kick just outside the Arrows box three minutes after the restart and Lucky Mohomi forced Arrows shot-stopper Mbaeva into a decent save from the set-piece.

In the 56 minute, Malawi international Mhango found some space on the edge of the Stars box and he turned before firing a low shot which went narrowly wide of the target.

The attacker then set his Arrows teammate Mahachi through on goal two minutes later, but the Zimbabwean winger was brilliantly denied by Stars shot-stopper Mathole from close range.

Stars head coach Giovanni Solinas decided to introduce last season's Absa Premiership Golden Boot winner Moeketsi Sekola for Vilakazi in the 69th minute.

With 16 minutes left on the clock, former Bloemfontein Celtic winger Danny tried his luck from range and Mbaeva made a great save to deny the Stars left-winger.

At the other end, Mathole produced a brilliant save to deny Mhango his brace in the 84th minute, and ultimately, Arrows held onto their slender lead and they won 1-0 on the day.
