Free State Stars add to Celtic’s woes

Free State Stars beat Bloemfontein Celtic 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match on Saturday afternoon at Goble Park stadium.

A first half goal by Lucky Mohomi was enough to hand Ea Lla Koto their second victory in 2016.

In the first 10 minutes, both sides displayed good football.

It was the hosts who had the first chance on goal with Bokang Thlone shooting from distance, but Patrick Tignyemb made a good save.

Towards the 20th minute Tshepo Rikhotso nearly broke Andrea Fileccia’s leg in a tackle and was lucky to only get away with a booking.

Fileccia was replaced by Sello Japhta as a result.

In the 22nd minute, Mohomi managed to hand the hosts the lead when he received a pin point pass from the right and made no mistake with just the keeper to beat, 1-0.

The speedy Thapelo Morena used his pace in the 33rd minute to trouble Stars’ defence and made a great move towards the 18-yard area only to see his well struck shot going above the crossbar.

After 40 minutes of action, striker Geoffrey Massa came close to securing an equaliser for Phunya Sele Sele as he unleashed a powerful shot from a set piece, but it was parried away by the keeper.

It was 1-0 at the interval in favour of Giovanni Solinas’ Stars, but the resumption of the second half saw Celtic pushing forward.

However, the Bethlehem side was stable at the back.

In the 52nd minute Mohomi attempted a long range shot, but Tignymeb shepherded it to safety.

Following a good move by Celtic in the 59th minute, Morena was set free and tried to chip the keeper, but Diakite produced a wonderful save.

Towards the 70th minute, substitute Dumisani Zuma tried to beat Diakite on his near post but his attempt lacked power.

The enterprising Nyatama was denied by Dikaite with 12 minutes to go - he received a good pass from Lamola in the box and after turning his man, the former Mamelodi Sundowns’ man disappointingly sent his shot straight at the keeper.

After a few minutes, Zuma was denied by the upright with Diakite ball watching.

Ea Lla Koto were successful in keeping Celtic at bay and claimed the three points as they move to the sixth spot on the log with 21 points.

Celtic, on the other hand, go down to the ninth spot with 17 points.
