Stars, SuperSport share spoils

Free State Stars and SuperSport United shared the spoils after their Absa Premiership match at Goble Park in Bethlehem finished 0-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Free State had the first shot on goal in the second minute courtesy of Danny Venter, but his 22-yard effort sailed inches over the crossbar.

Six minutes later Mrisho Ngasa also tried his luck from long range, but the Ea Lla Koto man also fired over the target.

SuperSport’s first attempt on goal came in the tenth minute when Jeremy Brockie met a corner-kick at the back post, but his 14-yard volley was well-saved by the keeper.

The next real effort on goal only came on the half hour mark when Dove Wome worked his way into the Stars box, but his 16-yard stinger was spectacularly saved by Daouda Diakite.

Free State came closest to opening the scoring in the first half when Andrea Fileccia met a right-wing cross from Ngasa in the 40th minute, but his header struck the woodwork and bounced away from danger.

The half ended 0-0.

Brockie should have found the back of the net three minutes into the second half when he met a low right-wing cross from Fagrie Lakay, but he missed the open goal from 14 yards out.

On the hour mark Venter came close to scoring when he saw his thunderous 30-yard free-kick tipped over the crossbar by the SuperSport goalkeeper.

In the 63rd minute Brockie had another chance to score for the visitors when he was put through on goal by Wome, but the New Zeeland born striker was denied in a one-on-one with Diakite.

Six minutes later Moeketsi Sekola broke through on goal, but he fired a low 14-yard shot across the face of the SuperSport goalpost.

In the 78th minute it was Wome's turn to have a shot on goal from the edge of the box, but he dragged his shot wide.

Both teams pushed forward in the final ten minutes, but neither could find the winner as the spoils were shared.
