Sundowns held by brave Aces

Defending Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns looked a frustrated outfit at the end of 90 minutes as they were held to a goalless draw by Mpumalanga Black Aces in Atteridgeville on Wednesday.

The pair were made to share the points, but Aces will walk away the happier of the two.

Despite Sundowns' dominance in the first half, Aces managed a foothold in the second and took the game to the hosts for large parts of the game.

Katlego Mashego, Surprise Moriri and Cuthbert Malajila all had early chances, but some good work from Jackson Mabokgwane kept his side in the contest with a couple of routine saves in the opening quarter.

Aces hit back with a tame long-range effort after the half-hour mark, but Denis Onyango, who made his first appearance of the season, was up to the task.

Moriri had the best chance of the half just seconds before the interval when some superb build-up play put the veteran dead in front of goal.

His shot, however, left a lot to be desired and went sailing over the top of the bar to round off a largely frustrating opening 45.

Level at the break, Sundowns looked unsettled in the second half and struggled to create any meaningful chances.

Chances eventually opened up for the hosts in the form of Tebogo Langerman and Teko Modise, but neither could work the goalkeeper, who was largely untroubled in the second half.

That's how it would end as the two teams walked away a point in hand, both keepers happy with a clean sheet.
