Wits advance to Telkom KO quarters

Bidvest Wits cruised into the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout with a 3-0 win over Moroka Swallows at the Bidvest Stadium on Friday night.

Goals from Jabulani Shongwe, Buhle Mkhwanazi and Vincent Pule saw Gavin Hunt’s side rack up an impressive victory at the start of the 2014 League Cup, while the Birds suffered a fourth successive defeat across all competitions.

Wits started the match strongly and created a great chance to open the scoring as early as the seventh minute. Vincent Pule played a one-two that put him one-on-one with goalkeeper Sage Stephens, but he opted for a poor pass instead of taking on the responsibility himself.

Five minutes later the Clever Boys again threatened the visitors’ goal, as a corner kick caused mayhem in the Swallows defence, but an unbalanced Buhle Mkhwanazi missed his kick from just a few metres out.

The Birds offered little in attack, but almost got lucky in the 24th minute. A free kick from Dikgang Mabalane was met by a Wits defender, but the ball rebounded off Ashraf Hendricks and nearly crept into the home side’s net.

However, Wits got their just rewards for a strong first half performance when Jabulani Shongwe put them ahead 10 minutes before the break. The former Mamelodi Sundowns man curled a beautiful left-footed shot into the top corner from 20 metres out to put the hosts 1-0 up.

It took just 15 minutes of the second half for the Clever Boys to double their advantage. Sameehg Doutie provided a perfect in-swinging corner kick from the left and Mkhwanazi powered home an unstoppable header at the near post to make it 2-0 on the hour mark.

Six minutes later it was 3-0. Some slick passing from Wits saw Doutie whip in another fine cross, this time from the right flank, and youngster Vincent Pule arrived at the far post to steer home a perfectly executed left-footed volley.

From then on it was smooth sailing for Wits, who easily saw out the rest of the game to secure advancement into the next round.
