Kedebe brace as Wits stun Swallows

Bidvest Wits had Getaneh Kedebe to thank as the Ethiopian scored a brace to help them to a 3-0 thrashing of Moroka Swallows in an Absa Premiership meeting in Johannesburg on Friday.

Kedebe scored two, while Sameehg Doutie added a third to end a dismal week for Gavin Hunt on a high.

Bidvest Wits lost two games in a row, first to Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 before losing to Ajax Cape Town in midweek, but put up a fine display at a freezing Bidvest Stadium.

The win was the Clever Boys' third of the season, taking them to 10 points from five games so far this season.

A reserved opening quarter quickly made way for the opening goal, seconds after Swallows flashed wide of the mark as Nomvete put his snap-shot wide.

At the other end, however, Kedebe made no mistake from a Wits corner, which Swallows failed to clear.

The ball fell kindly for Phumlani Ntshangase, who rattled-off a shot at goal, but Kedebe interfered, trapping the ball before swinging his leg and lifted his shot into the roof of the net to hand Wits the early advantage.

Swallows boss Zeca Marques was left with somewhat of a headache by the time half-time arrived after he was forced to make two substitutions inside 45 minutes.

Both Nomvethe and Lerato Chabangu were forced off the field with knocks and Marques looked notably concerned by the double-header of injures to his two key players so far this season.

Wits didn't have the same issues and soon went a further goal ahead, as Kedebe bagged his second after a brilliant cross from Toriq Losper found an unmarked Kedebe in the area.

The Ethiopian made no mistake as he guided his header past Greg Etafia in the 56th minute.

If the home fans thought that would be it, they would have been delighted by Wits' third goal seven minutes later.

Doutie, brought on by coach Gavin Hunt just four minutes prior, scored a splendid free-kick from some way out to open his league account for the Clever Boys.

The win takes Wits to third in the Absa Premiership standings with 10 points, two behind log-leading Kaizer Chiefs.
