Ngcobo penalty fires Wits to win

Sthembiso Ngcobo's 70th minute penalty secured a 1-0 Absa Premiership win for Bidvest Wits over SuperSport United at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday evening.

Gavin Hunt's men struggled to find their rhythm throughout the 90, but ultimately came out with a valuable win on the night.

In an attempt to sure up their defence, SuperSport United head coach Cavin Johnson named new boy Thamsanqa Teyise alongside Clayton Daniels with Mor Diouf dropping to the bench.

In team news for the visitors, Jackson Mabokgwane continued between the posts for Bidvest Wits as Moeneeb Josephs continued to nurse a leg injury. Furthermore Giorgi Nergadze took his place in midfield after he received his work permit while Sthembiso Ngcobo spearheaded the attack.

SuperSport started the game on the front foot with Mabokgwane forced into a couple of divine interventions as Matsatsantsa searched for space in behind the Clever Boys defensive line.

Both teams continued to move the ball well, but with no reward in what was a very tactical encounter.

Bidvest Wits who had until half-time failed to score a goal in 165 minutes of competitive football this season, struggled to break down Matsatsantsa's defence with their best chance of the half falling to Toriq Losper on the cusp of half-time. But his free-kick attempt from just outside the area was easily saved by Ronwen Williams.

SuperSport should have taken the lead six minutes into the second stanza following a fast paced move from the back.

Michael Morton played Lebogang Manyama into space on the left-flank and the former Ajax Cape Town winger then picked out Bradley Grobler at the far post with a precise outside of the foot cross, but the SuperSport striker failed to hit the target from point-blank range.

The Clever Boys were awarded a spot-kick in the 70th minute after Morton brought down Sibusiso Vilakazi inside the area; Ngcobo duly stepped up and converted the penalty via the inside of the post.

Bennett Chenene and Morton tested Mabokgwane in the final minutes of the game, but the Bidvest Wits shot stopper was proving hard to beat as the Clever Boys held on for all three points.
