Promoted Chippa stun Dikwena

Chippa United marked their return to the Absa Premiership with a 2-0 win over Platinum Stars at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday evening.

First-half goals from Andile Mbenyane and David Zulu secured all three points for the Chilli Boys, who move – temporarily at least – to the top of the log table on goal difference.

As for Dikwena, the result is a disappointing comedown after their impressive win over league champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 quarterfinals last weekend.

Chippa got off to a great start and opened the scoring just nine minutes in, with captain Andile Mbenyane beating Siyabonga Mpontshane in the visitors’ goal to make it 1-0.

Less than 20 minutes later it was 2-0 to the Chilli Boys, with former Black Leopards striker David Zulu scoring his first goal for the club since his off-season move.

That Stars were off the pace of the game was evident in the fact that they had three players – Bongani Nyathi, Solomon Mathe and Rofhiwa Tshikovhi – booked by the referee within the first 30 minutes.

The second half saw Stars fight to come back into the match, but the Cape Town team – now based in Port Elizabeth – were able to hold out for a victory that coach Kosta Papic will hope sets the tone for the coming season.

Stars ended the match with 10 men after defender Tshikovhi received his second yellow card in the 89th minute and was sent for an early shower.

Chippa’s next league action sees them play away to SuperSport United on Tuesday evening, while Platinum Stars will be home to Free State Stars the following day.
