SuperSport dent Wits' title hopes

Ronwen Williams and Moeneeb Josephs starred as SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits missed plenty of scoring chances in what ended a 0-0 draw in their Absa Premiership clash in Tshwane.

The Clever Boys edged the home side in terms of the genuine scoring chances they had and never took so will probably feel they should have won the game.

Despite several chances that only the attacking players can be blamed for not putting away, both goalkeepers also made some telling saves.

Bidvest Wits came close to scoring in the 7th minute when Calvin Kadi got onto the end of a corner kick at the far post but could not keep his header down, following some suspect defending by the home side.

Five minutes ;later and the visitors were again asking questions of the SuperSport defence, but this time Papy Faty could not control his volley, which flew over the crossbar.

In the 16th minute Wits’ in-form striker Sthembiso Ngcobo found space inside the danger area and tried to curl a shot into the far post but got his direct ion wrong. The best chance of the game thus far.

In the 20th minute Dino Ndlovu got free at the far post for SuperSport, but his header did not have enough power to beat Moeneeb Josephs who saved low at the far post.

Five minutes later and Jabulani Shongwe came close with a fantastic driven shot, but Ronwen Williams was able to tip the ball over the bar,

Then it was the turn of Josephs to keep his side in the game when he brilliantly dived to his right to save what was a powerful volley from Grobler who broke through on goal and looked set to score.

Shongwe should have done better in the 36th minute when he ran into the area to volley a shot on goal following Ngcobo’s header right into his path, but he could not keep the ball down.

Almost immediately after halftime, Bidvest Wits should have taken the lead when they combined brilliantly to put Kadi through on goal, but as he shaped to curl his shot into the corner he leant backwards and skied his effort.

There was yet another missed attempt in the 59th minute when Ngcobo fired in a shot across goal, but the ball hit the upright and Shongwe wasted the rebounded attempt.

In the 64th minute substitute Sibusiso Zuma beat his man and drew a save out of Josephs as he went in search of the game’s opening goal.

Jabu Mahlangu had a great chance to hit the net in the 84th minute but he could not connect cleanly with the ball after finding space on a breakaway.

And moments later Williams was tested by a low Faty shot, but the keeper came out tops yet again.

In a moment that pretty much summed up a frustrating afternoon for both sides, Thabo September was sent off for a late tackle on Erwin Isaacs in the 87th minute.
