Henyekane sinks Wits

A hat-trick form Richard Henyekane handed Free State Stars a 3-1 win over ten man Bidvest Wits in an Absa Premiership match at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night.

It was a poor display from Wits who suffered their fifth loss of the season and now sit in third place on the table, nine points adrift of league leaders Kaizer Chiefs.

The win for Stars, though, saw them out of the relegation zone and up to 14th place on 20 points, one point clear of 15th place Polokwane City.

It was a rather slow start to the match with neither side venturing too far forward in attack. Instead, both teams struggled to keep hold of the ball early on and squander possession with some poor passing.

The game sprang into life, though, on the 36th minute when Henyekane gave Stars the lead after superb solo effort saw him beat a couple of defenders before slotting home, 1-0.

Wits tried to hit back before the break but the teams entered halftime with Stars in the lead.

The start of the second 45 saw Wits controlling the possession stakes as they tried to get back into the game, but they were unable to breach a resilient Stars defence.

Stars suffered a bit of set-back on the hour mark when goalkeeper Tshepo Motsoeneng had to leave the field injured and was replaced by Bruce Mtshali.

With Wits continue to push forward they left themselves exposed to the counter-attack and Henyekane made the most of it in the 70th minute when he turned home a Luyolo Nomandela pass to make it 2-0.

Any chance of a Wits comeback was dented in the 88th minute after Tebogo Moerane was sent for an early shower after receiving his second yellow card.

The result was put beyond doubt a minute later when Henyekane grabbed his third goal of the night after a goalmouth scramble, 3-0.

Wits did manage a consolation goal in the dying seconds of the match courtesy of Robin Ngalande, but it was too little too late, 3-1.
