Celtic add to Chippa's misery

Lerato Manzini ‘s 77th minute strike secured all three points for Bloemfontein Celtic against bottom side Chippa United in an Absa Premiership game at Botshabelo Stadium on Saturday afternoon to move into fifth place on the log.

Bloemfontein Celtic went into the game on the back off a 4-1 win over lower division side Milano United in the Nedbank Cup. Celtic coach Clinton Larsen made one change to his side that progressed to the last 16 of the cup competition, with John Arwuah coming back into the starting line-up. Siwelele were keen to come away with a victory and keep the heat on neighbours Free State Stars.

Chippa United, on the other hand, went into the game looking to move off the bottom of the table. The Chilli Boys, who were 10 places below Siwelele going into this game in the league, were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup last weekend by National First Division side United FC. Celtic travelled to Bloemfontein in search of only their fourth victory of the campaign.

Celtic captain Thabo Nthethe forced a brilliant save out of Kassaly in the fourth minute but the defender was in any case judged to be offside.

Chippa United thought they had opened the scoring when Brent Carelse found the back of the net from a Masibusane Zongo free-kick in the 23rd minute. But, like Celtic’s effort 20 minutes earlier, Carlse was judged to be offside.

Zongo went close for Chippa in 27th minute but his free-kick went agonisingly wide of Patrick Tignyemb’s right hand post.

Carelse had a chance to give his side the lead going into the break but the veteran midfielder’s shot from outside the area was easily gathered by Tignyemb.

The tightly-contested half ended goalless with both sides struggling to create chances from open play, with the main threat coming from set-pieces.

Zongo created the first real chance of the second stanza in the 62nd minute. This time around the midfielder’s left-footed strike narrowly passed Tignyemb’s left hand post.

Celtic had an excellent opportunity to open the scoring in the 74th minute but Mogorosi couldn’t direct his close range header into the back of the net.

Lerato Manzini opened the scoring for Siwelele in the 77th minute. The striker gathered the ball in the box and fired passed Kassaly from close range after good work from Mogorosi down the right flank.

Kubheka nearly equalised for his side minutes later, but the midfielder’s shot from outside the area cannoned off the post.

The Bloemfontein side gathered all three points to move within four points of neighbours Free State Stars.
