Vasco da Gama claimed an emphatic 3-0 win over Cape Town rivals Santos at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but it was not enough to prevent them finishing second from bottom on the log, which means they will play in the promotion/relegation playoffs.

A brace from Jonathan Armogam sandwiched a goal from Jerome Ramathlakwana, as Vasco crushed their local rivals, but Moroka Swallows’ 2-0 win at Black Aces meant that the Cape side was unable to lift themselves away from the playoff spot.
Vasco started strongly, clearly intent on putting the pressure on Santos – and Moroka Swallows – early on. They duly broke the deadlock 20 minutes in, with Armogam finishing from close range after getting onto the end of a lopping cross from Josephy Kamwendo.
On 36 minutes the home team almost doubled their advantage, with Santos goalkeeper Ryan Harrison producing a fine save to keep out a shot from defender Francois Adams at a corner kick situation.
Two minutes later it was the turn of Posnett Omony to make a great stop in order to keep out Graham King’s attempt at an equaliser.
Ramathlakwana made it 2-0 to Vasco 13 minutes after the restart, scoring with a fine shot from the edge of the box that had Harrison clutching at thin air.
The People’s Team had a chance to halve the deficit on 65 minutes when they were awarded a penalty, but King’s spot kick was saved by Omony.
Armogam wrapped up a fine performance, both by him and his team, when he scored an excellent goal to make it 3-0 in the 86th minute, but by this stage news had filtered through from Mpumalanga that Swallows were beating Aces.
Santos ended eighth on the log with 37 points, while Vasco ended 15th with 30 points. They will compete against three first division teams in the playoffs, with the winner awarded a place in the 2011/12 Absa Premiership.
