The South Africa under-20 national team lost 2-1 to Ghana in a Fifa under-20 World Cup last-16 match at the Ismailia Stadium in Ismailia, Egypt on Tuesday.

Former SuperSport United striker Kermit Erasmus gave Amajita, as the team is known, the lead in the 58th minute. Andre Ayew equalised in the 66th and the game went in to extra-time.

In the 99th minute Dominic Adiyiah netted the winner and the Black Satellites – as the Ghana side is known – will now face the Korea Republic in the quarterfinals.

In the group stages Amajita were held to a 2-2 draw by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), then lost 4-0 to Hungary and then beat Honduras 2-0 to make it through to the next round.

“First of all, I must congratulate Ghana on going through to the next round, they played very well. I think that after scoring the first goal, my players thought the game was wrapped up and we were caught out,” SA coach Serame Letsoaka told Fifa.com

“The equaliser came at a time which deflated us. Maybe if we had converted our chances, it would have been different, but I can't criticise the players, they gave it their all today. There had to be a winner and today it was Ghana.”
