Siyabonga Nomvethe underwent surgery on his toe on Wednesday but will have to wait before he gets a prognosis of how long his recovery time will be.
Nomvethe went into hospital for an operation in the morning and was home just hours later to begin his recovery.
Surgeons fixed a ligament in his big toe but have to wait until the swelling goes down before they can determine how long his recovery time will be.
It is a call from the medical experts that is keenly awaited by both Moroka Swallows and Bafana Bafana, as well as the 35-year-old himself.
“If I know Nomvethe, he will push himself to get fit as soon as he can, but we think he might not be able to play again this year and can then come back after the mid-season break," said Swallows coach Zeca Marques.
But this will not be good news for Bafana Bafana, who hope to have the league’s top scorer from last season in their squad for the upcoming African Nations Cup finals.
Nomvethe has been called up by new coach Gordon Igesund but had to pull out on the eve of the match in Brazil because of injury.
