Patrick Tignyemb believes that Bloemfontein Celtic have what it takes to win the Telkom Knockout Cup.

Phunya Sele Sele last tasted a major cup glory when they lifted the SAA Supa 8 trophy in 2005, under the guidance of Paul Dolezar. The Free State side defeated SuperSport United 1-0 in the final courtesy of a goal scored by Robson Kilambe. Since then Celtic’s cup run has been unimpressive; something Tignyemb strongly believes they will improve this season.

“It’s been a while since the club won a major silverware. We have been unlucky in cup games. But we have to get to the final of the Telkom Knockout Cup. It would be fantastic to win a trophy for our loyal supporters this season. Last term, we were knocked out of this tournament in the first round. We are determined to do better than the previous seasons this time around,” The Cameroonian goalkeeper tells bloemfonteincelticfc.co.za.

Siwelele were paired against Chippa United when the competition’s Last 16 stage draw was conducted in Johannesburg on Monday night. The match will be played in Cape Town, but date and venue are still to be confirmed.

This means Celtic will face United for the second time in the space of four weeks. The clubs met in a League encounter which was won 2-0 by the PSL rookies.

“We are expecting a difficult match but we have capable players that could do the business for us. They have beaten us in the league and our Telkom Knockout Cup meeting will afford us a chance to avenge that defeat. We have rectified the mistakes that we made against them. They are going to face a different team altogether. Cup games are completely different from league matches and we'll just go out there and do our best. I'm happy that our supporters are starting to come to our matches in numbers and we really value their backing,” Tignyemb says.

"We don't have a cup jinx. We'll go in with an open mind. History will not mean much and all that will matter is what happens on the field. We have told ourselves as players that we should win one of the competitions on offer this season. We are targeting this cup,” he adds.
