Bernard Parker is just three goals away from becoming the fastest Kaizer Chiefs player to 10 goals in a Premier Soccer League season.
A haul of seven goals in the first six games of the 2012/13 campaign puts the Bafana Bafana forward well on course to setting a new club record, eclipsing the past performances of both Pollen Ndlanya and Zambian international Collins Mbesuma.
Saturday’s match in Port Elizabeth offers the Benoni based Parker yet another opportunity to inch closer to the achievement.
Unbeaten Chiefs, who are the early season leaders in the Premier Soccer League, face Bloemfontein Celtic at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
In 1998, it took Ndlanya 11 games to get to 10 goals. He scored in six different games in passing onto double figures including a hat trick against Hellenic.
Ndlanya ended the season with 21 league goals.
In 2004, Collins Mbesuma took 13 games to get his first 10 of the season but then kept on scoring and finished with a total of 28 – the highest ever in the PSL in a single season.
His haul included a hat-trick against Dynamos on the opening day of the campaign, which is an achievement that Parker bettered last month when he scored four goals in Chiefs’ first league game of the new season – a 6-0 away thrashing of AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
