McCarthy, who is the all-time Bafana Bafana top goal scorer, suffered an injury in his return to the national team fold in the international friendly against five-time world champions Brazil.

According to the Bucs medical team, McCarthy suffered a hamstring tear and will require at least another 4-5 weeks before he can start playing again. Bucs’ number 17 is however optimistic that he could recover a lot earlier than expected, as he continues to go through rehabilitation with club Physiotherapist John Williams.

Speaking to Orlandopiratesfc.com, McCarthy said: “I still feel a bit of pain but its getting better by the day.”

“Sitting out for six weeks is a long time, especially for a guy like me, who enjoys being on the field. Fortunately I’ve already started rehabilitation which will obviously speed up my recovery process. I hope to recover a lot sooner than what the doctors say but only time will tell.”

Meanwhile, defender Happy Jele and midfielder Manti Moholo will not be doing full training with the rest of the squad as they are nursing minor knocks.
