Defending Africa Cup of Nations champions Zambia took a step toward appearing at the 2013 finals in South Africa after defeating Uganda 1-0 in the first leg of their final round qualifier in Ndola on Saturday afternoon.
Chipolopolo may be slightly disappointed at not having established a greater lead ahead of the second leg away in Kampala next month, but they will be confident of at least claiming a draw in order to advance to the tournament.
Zambia broke the deadlock in the match as early as the 21st minute when captain Chris Katongo was left unmarked in the penalty area and was allowed to finish off a long throw-in from Davies Nkausu.
The hosts had further chances in the second half, including another for Katongo which saw him rattle the woodwork, but they were unable to extend their advantage. Uganda’s Cranes created little in attack, though they did have one good chance on 82 minutes for Dan Wagaluka, but Kennedy Mweene kept his side ahead.
The return leg is set for October 13.
