Ajax Cape Town are set to sign Brazilian teenager Wanderson Costa Viana later today, the club said on Friday.

He arrives in Cape Town on Friday and Ajax, who have reserved their fifth foreign spot in this season’s squad for the player, will get him to sign a contract straight away.

Wanderson has already been on trial at Ajax but at first was considered too expensive for the Cape Town club.

But with the money they have since garnered in the sale of Thembinkosi ‘Terror’ Fanteni to Wits last month and the saving on the salary bill with the departure of Brent Carelse to Chippa United, the way is now clear for the Brazilian to join the team.

Coach Maarten Stekelenburg believes could be as exciting an asset as the Zimbabwe wonder kid Khama Billiat.

“He is a nippy, creative and a very exciting and skilful player in the same mould as Billiat. I hope management will get him this week.”

Ajax decided against signing centre back James Okwousa, even though the burly Nigerian made a favourable impression on the club when he played for them against Manchester United in July, in order to leave open a place for Wanderson.

They also off loaded Nigerian striker George Akpabio, who signed in January, to Vasco da Gama of the National First Division.

Wanderson, who official age is 18 but is disputed by some Brazilian publications, was the property of Greek giants Olympiakos last season, who signed him after scouting him at a Brazilian youth tournament. Last season they loaned him out to gain experience at Doxa Dramas in the Greek league but have since released him.

“Wanderson has a great first touch complimented with fantastic dribbling skills, agility and he can fit into our attacking style of play,” said Ajax’s chief executive officer George Comitis. “The player arrives today and we are hoping to finish all the paperwork as soon as possible.”
